The new hybrid clubs are a breakthrough not only for the average golfer but for the Tour players as well!! Without changing your swing, you can hit the ball higher and straighter than you can with your 3- or 4-iron.
The question id what type of swing do you use? My answer id the same swing you used with your long irons. This means playing the ball forward in your stance, and using your normal grip, stance and posture.
With a relaxed posture at address, take the club back low and make a smooth, comfortable turn using a relaxed tempo with a ¾ backswing. On the forward swing, don’t hit down sharply on the ball, rather make more of a sweeping-type swing, hitting down on the ball very slightly whilst accelerating down through the ball to a full follow through. You should take a tiny divot, if any divot at all.
The key is to remember to swing within yourself, say at about 80 percent of your normal effort. The club will do the rest, even off the tightest fairway lies. Hybrids are light, forgiving and easy to swing.
From the fairway the ball position is close to the centre of your stance. Swing slightly more down and through the ball. You should make contact with the ball first and then take a small divot. Again, you want a full follow through.
From the fairway bunker, assuming a good lie, position the ball centre to slightly back of your stance to ensure the hybrid makes contact with the ball first. Do NOT dig you feet into the sand as you would normally do. Use a shorter, ¾ backswing minimizing any lower body movement but with a full follow through. Again, use a smooth tempo accelerating through the ball.
Hybrids come into their own from the rough as the mass behind the club helps drive through the grass and resist twisting. Again, a smooth, accelerating tempo through the ball is best because “going after the shot” will probably result in the ball popping up.
A further use for the hybrid golf club is shots from just off the green where you need little loft to get over the fringe (very similar to a chip and run shot as you would do with say a 7 or 8 iron but far more chance of success). The hybrid is almost made of fore these “chip” shots.
